Description

Torri Wejter - The tower was built in 1710 on the advice of Chevalier d’Argens. Up to some hundred years ago it still stood alone in the fields and although it is not big (32 sqm internal footprint) or high, it guarded the road from Imsida to Birkirkara. From this tower any approaching danger could be spotted at enough distance to sound the alarm to the village. The word Wejter here is a toponym and it is diminutive of the Maltese word water which means gut, but here it is figuratively used as a narrow passage or gorge. In such places one could probably find an essential commodity - water, although in the local climate this may not have been found all year round.
