United Nations Pensions Programme

There is a government-backed initiative here in Malta called the ‘United Nations Pensions Programme’ that gives the granting of “special tax status” to retirees of the organisation if they qualify and meet the conditions. Successful applicants will be granted a tax rate of 15% on any pension income remitted to Malta. In order to qualify for the programme, individuals must adhere to the following criteria:

  • Applicants cannot already be a permanent or long-term resident of Malta
  • He/she must be in receipt of a UN pension and includes Widow’s/Widowers of ex-UN employees as long as they move at least 40% of their pension to Malta.
  • Applicants cannot be of Maltese nationality
  • Applicants cannot already be registered in any of the following tax schemes currently in operation in Malta: Residents Scheme Regulations, High Net Worth Individuals, Global Residence Programme, Residence Programme Rules, Malta Retirement Programme Rules, Qualifying Employment in Innovation & Creativity Rules or the Highly Qualified Persons Rules.

Note: An applicant may renounce ties to any of the aforementioned programmes prior to submitting their application.

Property requirements for successful applicants to this United Nations Pensions Programme are as follows:

  • If buying a property the minimum threshold is €220,000 for the south of Malta and Gozo or €275,000 for all other parts of the Island
  • If renting the minimum threshold is as follows: south of Malta and Gozo – €8750 per annum, all other areas of Malta – €9600 per annum.
  • No other person other than the beneficiary and his/her dependents can reside at the qualifying property and this residence cannot be let or sub-let.
